Many people in the UK feel breathless, which can be a scary symptom. People who feel breathlessness often have a worse quality of life, do less activity and have to go to hospital more often. The main cause for feeling breathless is a lung or heart condition and some people will see a lung or heart specialist to help them. There are lots of different tools to help manage this symptom.
There are different types of feelings of breathlessness. Some people say they feel like they are gasping for breath and others say their chest feel tight or it feels like their muscles have to work very hard to breathe. We do not know if these types of breathlessness should be treated in different ways. We want to find out what type of breathlessness people are feeling and try to understand what the cause might be. We will then try and develop treatments that are specific for these different types of breathlessness.
We would like to speak to people if they are breathless to understand how this project may help. Some of the conditions we are interested in are: heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, COPD, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease and asthma. If you have one of these conditions and/or you feel breathless we would like to hear from you.
